The number of hypnotherapy sessions needed for smoking cessation (quitting smoking) permanently can vary from person to person, depending on a persons history, circumstances, related and unrelated issues and a persons mind-set on becoming a non smoker and their feeling about hypnosis and hypnotherapy.

I generally suggest a 3 session approach.  Although this can number can vary, I have found that for long term results, this is the most effective practice.
  • The first session

    • This is the longest session and is around 1½ hours.  It is slightly longer than the others because I spend some time getting to know you, getting to know the reasons why you would like to stop smoking, talking you through some information on hypnosis and hypnotherapy (there is a lot of misinformation and half truths out there) and answering any questions that you may have.

    • When I am happy that I have all the information that I need and you are comfortable and happy about hypnosis we then move onto the hypnosis part of the session.

There is nothing that you need to do except sit back (in a very comfortable recliner chair) and allow me to guide you into a very gentle, relaxing, deep hypnotic rest.

Now it is time to go through the stop smoking hypnosis session.

    • If you need any more information on hypnosis please click on one of the following links
      • What is hypnosis?
      • What does hypnosis feel like?
      • Commonly asked questions.
      • If you have any other questions or comments please go to the Contact Form page.

    • When this session of the hypnosis for quitting smoking has ended, I will wake you up from the hypnosis, you will still feel very relaxed but able to focus and continue with the remainder of the day with a positive outlook, knowing that you can easily, and will easily be a non smoker.

And this will feel so good.

    • Most people notice a big change in their attitude towards smoking, even after this first session.

If you are one of those people then it is important to build on that initial success, with the subsequent session really reaffirming the work done and making it fixed and permanent (the follow up sessions are also useful if there are any specific areas or situations that need attention).

If you are not one of those people that see the dramatic changes – don’t worry, it’s early days and it might just be the case that you need time to adjust (after all, for most people, this is something that you have done most of your life.  You shouldn’t get too disheartened if things don’t change immediately).

Sometimes, after the first session, the thought of smoking comes to mind, this can be misinterpreted by some as a craving or a desire, but it isn’t, it is just a memory of something from the past, a memory of habit that was once part of life – but that is all it is a memory.

  • The Second Session

    • This and any future sessions will last around one hour.

    • In this session we will discuss your feelings as regards to last week’s session and how you feel that things have been for you since.

I will then decide if there are any areas that need any further attention and which areas need strengthening.  There may be things that come up in between sessions one and two that weren’t addressed in the first, these are dealt with during this session.

This session will then continue with the hypnotherapy as in the first session.

This session is very important even when everything has gone perfectly because we use this session to make sure that the suggestions already given are permanent and not just a short term fix.

(Even though dramatic changes can be achieved in one session, and some hypnotherapists state that they guarantee that you will stop smoking in one hour, this seem like a very bold claim. It is my opinion that for long lasting results in altering long term habits you need at least two sessions, usually more.)

  • Any Subsequent Sessions

    • It is reasonably common to need a third session. This and any others would follow on – strengthening previous suggestions and working on the reasons why there is still some resistance or block from moving forwards to the desired result.
