Effects of Smoking
The effects of smoking are well known to just about everyone who smokes. It affects all parts of the body – this means, when a smoker finally makes that decision and becomes a non smokers they are going to improve every part of their body, with immediate as well as long term benefits. The list of ailments that can occur as a result of smoking is both long and worrying. This list includes (but is not limited to) –
Heart Attack and Coronary Disease
Stroke
Lung Problems
Cancer (throat, mouth, bladder, kidney, pancreas, cervix, stomach)
Emphysema (a progressive and potentially fatal lung disease)
Pneumonia and Chronic Bronchitis.
There have also been studies that suggest that long term smoking affects the brain. Not only does it increase the risk of stroke, but it may also affect its cognitive functioning.
Let’s have a closer look at some of the effects that smoking has on different parts of the body.
Hair
As well as the obvious effects of smoking on the hair (smells and staining) smokers are also prone to premature thinning and greying of the hair. Men who smoke are twice as likely to become bald as are men who do not smoke.
Brain
Smoking is a major cause of strokes. In the United States alone about 600,000 strokes occur each year, and about 30% of those strokes cause death.
Eyes
Smokers have a two to three times greater risk of developing cataracts (the leading cause of blindness worldwide) than a nonsmoker.
Nose
Smokers are almost twice as likely to have some problems with their sense of smell compared to someone who has never smoked. This is due to damage of the nasal passages during smoking. Smoking can also cause cancer of the nose.
Skin
The most noticeable effect of smoking is on the skin. Because of the deadly cocktail of chemicals in cigarettes (and cigars and pipe tobacco of course), and the resultant reduction in oxygen to the body’s organs, including the skin, there is a premature aging of the skin. The skin loses its healthy glow and takes on a yellowish-grey cast – often becoming dry and irritated, discoloured and leathery. The more cigarettes that you smoke, the worse your skin will become.
Mouth
The effects of tobacco (smoking and/or chewing) include bad breath and gum disease. More disturbing it can cause mouth, lip and tongue cancer. Smoking may also damage the taste bus affecting your sense of taste.
Teeth
A yellow discolouration of teeth and tooth decay are not uncommon problems for smokers.
